Hair We Go...

So, I got this question and I must answer it. A few people have asked about my hair as it appeared on the BOTS reunion, and now “I wanna letcha know…” The question:

Hi Melissa.

Yeah, I'm just some random person who has seen you on the television and gets a kick out of reading your news on your website.

But I've also got this tangled, knotty, curly-ass mess of hair that is unf***ingmanageable and I was wondering about your ironing "method". What's your secret magic mad skill?

If you have the time, please help me out because you do a kick ass job ironing your hair and I'm fed up with mine. It's too damn hot in Georgia to deal with this mess.

Thanks.
Susannah

Dear Susannah,

So, not everyone has the luxury and joy of having Patrick of Nine Zero Two Two Salon (9022 Sunset Blvd., LA, CA 90069 310.278.6738) cut, blow dry and flat iron her hair, I know. But when I must go it alone, this is what I do.

First, I wash my hair. I towel dry it, and I keep it just a little damp so that steam rises from the actually ironing. I don’t know if that’s okay to do to your hair, whether or not it damages it, but that’s what I do. So, now that the hair is semi-damp, I call on my good friend Coral to iron it with a Hair Art International iron. It has blue ceramic plates and costs $100. It will be the best hundred bucks you ever did spend. If Coral can’t do it, it can’t be done. Literally, I’m not doing it by myself. So grab a friend, a sister, a cousin, a gardener and tell them you need an hour of their time.

Now, have this person section off small, yes very small, pieces of your hair to be ironed. The smaller the section, the better the result and the less going back and fixing you’ll have to do. This person must get super close to the scalp. It might burn and crackle, but it’s worth it. Be a warrior. Throughout the ironing session, I apply small amounts of Biosilk. Patrick recommends using Kerastase products always and forever, but some of us don’t have bank like that. Biosilk is the next best thing, I think. Once you’re completely done, put another round of Biosilk in and brush it gently with one of those wooden boar’s tooth brushes. Then, just hope that the humidity doesn’t ruin your life and your new do. It will, but at least you tried. For sleeping with this new do (you’re going to want to keep it after all that work), sleep on a silky surface. Maybe put a nightgown around your pillow. Put in a soft scrunchie (I would never advise that you actually use the word scrunchie in public though) so that the hair doesn’t have bends and voila, you are straight up in business. And if you want to go the extra mile and be super out of control, apply a small dab of raspberry oil behind your ears. Boys like that I think. Of course, you’d have to have boys that like you to really know if it works and I don't know anything about that.
